Food, taste and the tongue

Food! I love food. Who can honestly say they don’t love food? The crunching, grinding, melting of the food in your mouth, the flavors bursting on your tongue, sweet, sour, salty, spicy and yes bitter. We love food. Whether it’s good or bad for our body. When it comes to food and taste, taste always wins for most of us. If it doesn’t taste good, we don’t want it. Taste; the sensation of flavor in the mouth and throat. Food must taste good.

My first unpleasant interaction with food, I was 6 years old and I was staying with my cousin. She could not cook to save our lives and I do mean that tastebudliwise. Her food was awful, nauseating even. Why do we eat from her? There was no one else to feed us at the time, my mom was away and like I said there was no one. No food saver, if there was such a thing, so we had to eat her food. The great thing about it she would cook a small about of food, which we were very happy about. Our portions would look like one small dumpling, half of green banana and 2 tablespoon of protein, whatever it was. It was tiny and we were grateful. We had several little trick to eating this awful food, this one stand out even today. We would wait until we were extremely hungry before eating. Majority of the time we were hungry based on portions we would have received the previous meal. Sometimes even when extremely hungry we still could not eat the food, it was just terrible. Imagine eating curry chicken that looks white, no salt or spice on it with raw rice. How do you even put rice in a pot to boil and it comes out the same way it went in. Fried pickled eggs, I hated egg, it was like eating salt fish without soaking or washing some of the salt off, I remember these days like it was yesterday. Those were fun day, love my cousin dearly and appreciated everything she did for us.

What would we do without our tongue?

That muscular organ in our mouth, that moist, pink tissue with tiny little bumps, thousands of taste buds covering those tiny little bumps. That makes our food taste so good or so bad. Without the tongue we would not be able to move food around in our mouth, or even roll food in that tiny ball when chewed properly and push it down the esophagus to our stomach. We must love and care for our tongue.

How does one care for their tongue?

Simple, use a clean toothbrush or a tongue cleaner and brush your tongue in a downward motion to get rid of all the accumulated germs aka bacteria. Please don’t apply a lot of pressure to the tongue when cleaning it. You don’t want to damage your favorite muscle, you just want to caress it. You can add a thin layer of toothpaste or coconut oil or any month cleaning you wish. After each cleaning ensure to rinse your mouth with water, salt water or simple drink some green tea as this reduce bacteria in your mouth. Drink lots of water.
